Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

The Soros Fellowship honors the contributions of immigrants and children of immigrants to the U.S. The award covers a living stipend of up to $25,000 per year and 50% of required tuition and fees, up to $20,000 per year for 2 years in any field at any U.S. university. Soros Fellows join a strong community of creative, original, innovative, and accomplished individuals, who all share the New American experience.




Scholarship Amount

$25,000/year living stipend for 2 years and 50% of required tuition and fees, up to $20,000/year


Annual Number of Scholarships Awarded

  • ~30 per year



Eligibility

  • One of the following must be true:
    • Be a U.S. citizen, but your birth parents were both born abroad as non-U.S. citizens
      • Your birth parents must have both been born outside the U.S. as non-U.S. citizens AND both parents must not have been eligible for U.S. citizenship at the time of their births
    • Been born abroad:
      • Be a U.S. naturalized citizen
      • Adopted and awarded U.S. citizenship
      • In possession of a valid green card
      • Been granted asylum or refugee status in the U.S.
      • Been born abroad, but graduated from both a U.S. high schools and a U.S. college (current and past DACA recipients included)
  • Hold a bachelor's degree by the start of the award
  • Plan to enroll full-time in an eligible graduate program at a U.S. university and by the application deadline, you must not have begun your 3rd year of the program you are seeking funding for
  • Not have reached or passed your 31st birthday by the application deadline



Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated creativity, originality, and initiative in one or more aspects of the applicant’s life
  • Demonstrated commitment to and capacity for accomplishment that has required drive and sustained effort
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights
  • Gives promise of continued significant contributions
  • Graduate training is relevant to the applicant’s long-term career goals and is of potential value in enhancing their future creativity and accomplishment
