The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-cost awards that provide tuition fees and a living stipend for any field of graduate study and research at the University of Cambridge. The scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to citizens of any country outside of the United Kingdom.
Scholarship Amount
Tuition fees, a living stipend, and a travel stipendAnnual Number of Scholarships Awarded
- ~80 per year
- ~25 from U.S. students and ~55 from international students
- 2/3 of the awards are offered to Ph.D. students
Eligibility
- Be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
- Hold a bachelor's degree by the start of the award
- Applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:
- Ph.D.
- MSc/MLitt
- 1-year postgraduate courses NOT including the following:
- Any undergraduate degree (BA) or second undergraduate degree (BA affiliated)
- Master of Business (MBA)
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree
- Graduate Course in Medicine
- Part-time degrees
- Non-degree courses

- Potential to succeed on the chosen course
- Reasons for choice of course
- Make a strong case for a particular postgraduate degree. You will need to demonstrate that you have the academic background and necessary skills and expertise to complete the course
- Contact with a potential lab supervisor with whom you will develop a research project for Ph.D. and most research MPhil applicants. A summary of the project is part of the application
- Taught MPhil and other applicants need to make a strong case for how completing the proposed course will facilitate your career plans
- Commitment to improving the lives of others
- A capacity for leadership
